What is a transfer portal in basketball? ›

The NCAA Transfer Portal, a database which allows other schools to confirm that a student-athlete can be recruited, was created, granting college student-athletes the ability to publicly declare intent to transfer and desire to speak to other schools.

It is an almost impossible situation as some college program or the other is likely to be interested. Yet, if a player were to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal and no team picks him up, he would not be playing that season. That does not mean he cannot go to school as they can transfer to be just a full-time student.

How do you view which athletes are in the transfer portal? The transfer portal is not public, it is only administrators and coaches for NCAA schools that have access to it. The moment any player enters his or her name on the portal it becomes viewable by coaches from different schools.

The transfer portal permits student athletes to place their name in an online database declaring their desire to transfer. Athletes enter the portal by informing their current school of their desire to transfer; the school then has two business days to enter the athlete's name in the database.

‍ Entering the Transfer Portal may impact your current scholarship as early as the next term, even if you do not end up transferring out. ‍Scholarships do not always transfer across schools.

Coaches are prohibited from sharing transfer portal information or access to the portal outside of the NCAA membership. DO COACHES SEE THE STUDENT-ATHLETE STATUS? YES, coaches will know if they can contact the student-athlete by viewing the student-athlete status.

These windows govern entry only — athletes can remain in the portal indefinitely until they find a new home. If they change their minds, they can withdraw and try to return to their old team… though their original squad can rescind their roster spot and/or scholarship as soon as they enter.

So entering the portal is effectively walking out on a pre-existing scholarship in many cases. This makes sense to a degree, that if you quit on the team they shouldn't have to pay for you. But in reality, many portal athletes will not find a great landing spot, and some won't find one at all.

The NCAA Transfer Portal is only accessible to NCAA Division I (DI), Division II (DII), and Division III (DIII) coaches and administrators. NAIA and two-year colleges do not have access to the NCAA Transfer Portal. For college student-athletes, deciding to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal can be a game-changer.

Can you pull out of the transfer portal? ›

Upon entering the transfer portal, a player can be contacted by other schools. That allows a player to weigh opportunities elsewhere. A player can opt to withdraw his or her name from the transfer portal at any time.

There are currently 3,843 names in the FBS transfer portal, per a source, which smashed the previous record of 3,502 set in the 2022-23 cycle. More than 1,200 of those names entered during this spring's 15-day window, injecting a jolt into college football midway through spring practice for many programs.

Players can ask the school through which they entered the portal to remove them. But once players ask to be entered, their school can cancel or reduce their scholarships for subsequent academic terms and has no obligation to take them back.

The NCAA will no longer limit the amount of times that athletes can transfer schools. Previously, athletes were allowed to transfer one time and play immediately, but they had to sit out a full year if they transferred schools a second time without a waiver.

Entering the transfer portal doesn't disqualify one from playing in their school's bowl game. However, a large portion of those players will decide against playing in the postseason as they look elsewhere.

Strictly speaking, the portal never closes. But the NCAA in 2022 added a 60-day transfer window to limit when athletes can enter and in October 2023 it decreased it to 45 days. For winter sports, that's a single 45-day period. Basketball has it starting the day following the NCAA Tournament selection shows.

The portal allows athletes to take control of their careers like never before, by not only deciding that they want to transfer, but entering their name in an online portal system. This effectively tells every other NCAA program that they are available to be recruited.
